We go into the Bay on sails, I feel like a brave capt. Peter Quill. It's just it, only that ship is not for space.
Being a rookie captain means experiencing the full range of emotions vividly. For the first time everything is new and exciting. I enjoy flying into the Bay on sails catching up with a friendly yacht going on a motor. I love our mood and atmosphere on Board. I say in a low voice - "boatswain!". In response, I hear a man's bass voice, almost shouting - "Yes, cap!" - "Whistle all up boatswain, get ready to moor!" And then even louder from the boatswain somewhere in the mess - "Hey crew, all up, a thousand devils, we're mooring!" I hear them laughing but doing what he said in a few seconds. "To your places!" - Everyone already knows what to do, everyone in their place is carefully waiting for further instructions. The track plays even louder, the posture straightens, the head is up with the eagle's gaze, we fly 7 knots! What a feeling inside of a young captain! It's fantastic!
There are still many adventures ahead, not only at a high point, but also mistakes and defeats. They say a good sailor is a cautious sailor. This is true, but it is not possible to avoid all the mistakes. The sail was not torn yet, the mast was not broken. Many will say it's crazy to say that. And I will ask in response, have you seen a good hockey player without bruises? And a famous rider without falling from a horse? To learn, you need to get close to your red line. Do everything for safety, but move on! I was just as disappointed as the excitement I described above at Pirogov lake when another boat hit my boat with its nose. In fact, it wasn't my fault, but I didn't care, I didn't save the ship, I had an accident, and even though everything was fine, I was in a bad mood for a few days. I hope that for me personally that case was a vaccination, you always need to be ready for unexpected in a sea, always understand that failures happen, and therefore you need to be doubly vigilant.
This trip was smooth and super positive. I can say for sure that I was lucky with the team. I assigned a cute girl without much experience as a first mate. It was a right decision, as her desire to learn and level of responsibility did the job. I was less nervous with her help, I trusted her. The atmosphere on Board was made by the Boatswain! Yura set this spirit of the ship! Always cheerful, always positive, he played the role of the bearded boatswain who had seen the sea and always drank wine and rum. To be honest, his loud response of "Yes, cap" made me happy every day. A woman on a ship is a trouble? Not at all on our Aida boat. Wonderful Dasha, Katya, Olya, Masha and Anya attracted the attention of the entire flotilla with their exercises on the deck during mooring! I didn't hear a single whim from them during the whole trip! Artyom, your lamb ribs were the most delicious thing that ever happened to me.
There were no restrictions on Board, we did what we wanted, drank wine when we wanted, ate when we wanted to eat, and swam a lot. We could drop the sails, slow down, and stop for a short break if we wanted to.
What else can I say about yachting as a young skipper? You have to be calm all the time. The sea loves the fluidity and inner peace. It's not easy at all for the first times at sea. There can be a lot of nervous situations. I think it is possible and sometimes necessary to shout. It shouldn't be a nervous voice, but rather confident and convincing, like a coach yelling "come on" on an athlete. I don't know if the team have seen that in me. But I'm sure that anyone can easily recognise an experienced skipper by his level of calmness. I recall our Admiral Vanya Brigida as he radiated calmness in waves in the air. This was our wonderful trip, and these are the thoughts I wanted to share with you as a novice skipper.
