Trip to South

(DUN LAOGHAIRE - ARKLOW - DUNMORE EAST - CROSSHAVEN)

14-16 July 2018
Storyteller: Ivan
Ivan, skipper and a passionate sailor.
We made 160 nautical miles in 3 days along the East-South coast of Ireland - it's almost 1 full day and night at sea. We had a nasty short waves because of the wind against the tide on the first day, followed by the night passage with the stars. The next day we watched FIFA 2018 finals (France vs. Croatia) is a cozy pub in Dunmore East. And on the third day we finally arrived at the Salve Marina in Crosshaven.
We arrived early morning on Saturday to Dun Laoghaire marina, which is a home to 820 boats. It is an excitement to start the passage from the heart of Irish sailing.

 Dun Laoghaire
We set off the marina on a sunny day. Just after that we managed to lose a cap in the water near the entrance, so other boats were patiently waiting until we cleared the passage.

Passed Dalkey, a wealthy southeast of Dublin. According to Wikipedia, it's one of the Dublin's more affluent areas, it has been home to writers and celebrities including Jane Emily Herbert, Maeve Binchy, Hugh Leonard, Bono, Van Morrison and Enya.

Everyone tried to stay some time at the helm to make beautiful pictures in a bright and clear skies.

We were going quite fast with the tide, but it was one of the rare moments with South wind going against us. Even a light breeze in a shallow sandbanks area creates an annoying swell.

We continued with a stylish pictures of the people staying at helm with one difference - everyone was attached to the cockpit with the harness line.

Tired and hungry we arrived to Arklow harbour 7 hours after the departure from Dun Laoghaire. Magnificent sunset and it's reflection in the water.

Creative Zakhar could make 'boat' sandwiches even at the sea, as he never feels sick.

We couldn't stay long in Arklow (even for the night), as a favourable tide direction (going south) approached in 3 hours. So we duty schedule with 2-3 persons staying outside anytime. Here Alex quickly learned the art of a helmsperson.

We arrived to Dunmore East without any problems on the go. It was a grey sky all day and rain sometimes, but very comfortable sailing without big waves and less tide. The boat left the Irish Sea locked between Ireland and England to an open water of the Ocean when it turned over the southeast corner of Ireland.

We arrived just on time - before the FIFA finals between Croatia and France began.
